Waldron and Peckham nearly turn over champions-elect

In week 14 the 1st XI hosted runaway league leaders Newport and inserted them. Rob Furniss was dropped first ball off Steve Taylor and then punished St.Georges for the error by making 89, which was the backbone of Newport’s 226/9. Mark Downes then took early wickets and it looked all over at 76/8, and many Newport supporters left, confident of another comfortable victory. However, instead of simply blocking out, the Dragons fought back and started to attack the target. A fantastic ninth wicket stand  of 118 by No. 7 Chris Waldron who hit 96 off 80 balls and No. 10 Scott Peckham with an unbeaten 30, forced the remaining visiting supporters to switch their car engines off. A win then looked possible in the fading light. When Waldron was out captain Ben Byram(11)  and Peckham continued to edge us closer before a worried  Newport managed to grab the last wicket with St.Georges only 19 short. In the reverse fixture at Newport, who also lead the division,  our seconds put up 241/8 with Sam Morgan(61) leading the way, but also with good contributions from Liam Buttery(20), Matt Conniffe(41) Jack Lamb(38), Dean Peckham(31) and Dave Pope(16). Opener Craig Davies’ 114 and 41 from Dave Nock down the order took Newport close but the 13 runs needed from the last over was too much and St.Georges got a close winning draw. Away at Chelmarsh the 3rd XI made a decent-looking 210/9 thanks to Alex Dillon(79), Mike Ross(49) and Ross Wilmot(26). But a big partnership between Steve Lewis(103) and Michael Bannister(80) for Chelmarsh gave them the win in 32 overs. At home to Allscott the fourths bowled out Allscott 3rds for for 104. Bobby Gill did all the damage with figures of 7/16. Allscott took regular wickets in reply and it needed young Dave Chesters (38no) to bat with a maturity beyond his years to steady the ship. Aaron Musgrove(12no) was also there at the end to see us home by 3 wickets.

President’s Day 2013

Over 100 Supporters and friends attended St. Georges President’s Day recently, where they enjoyed lunch and 2 20/20 cricket matches, held in memory of Jim Heath who sadly died last year. All proceeds from the day will be shared between the new Cricket Nets Fund & Birmingham Children’s Hospital – nominated by Jim’s wife Christine. Thanks to all who donated, sponsored or gave items for auction. A total of £3,300 was made on the day. My thanks must also go to the Chairman and Committee members of St. George’s C.C, the players, umpires, scorers & groundsmen. Not forgetting Dee & her staff for providing a wonderful lunch and also Mark & the bar staff, all of whom helped to make the event so successful. I would also like to thank Jeff Fletcher & The Sports & Social Club for the complete surprise presentation on my retirement from the Social Committee.
