Cound frustrate 1st XI

In week 6 the 1st team posted 213/6 against Cound, with Chris Miller (76no) finding form after good contributions from Mo Zaheer(42) and Anuj Chandla(38). In reply Cound battled well to reach 181/6. With Ben Byram injured, Steve Taylor unavailable and Chris Greensall injured after only two overs our bowling options were stretched. Neil Davies bowled extremely well for 4/37 in his 15 overs, but opener David Langton(76no) could not be removed. At Cound the 2nd XI were all out for 250. Sam Morgan(56), Jon Parkes (87) and Matt Conniffe(36). Bowlers Mike Myatt,Liam Forrester and Jon Parkes took two wickets apiece before Sam Morgan took 4 quick wickets to mop up the tail as Cound were bowled out for 140. The 3rd XI had to settle for a losing draw after Shrewsbury made 250/8. Jack Heath(47), Ryan Forrester(39) and Bobby Gill(47no) took us to 221/9. The 4th XI managed to avoid a repeat of last weeks batting debacle at Grove by succesfully chasing down 118 after Steve Pessall returned figures of 6/33. Mike Ross and Dom Musgrove got some runs on the board before wickets began to tumble – St.Georges eventually winning by two wickets. Disappointingly the U10s opposition again cried off so they didn’t get a game. The U15s batted with much more application this week to make 240 in 40 overs against a young Newport side. Great innings from Mark Tolley (80 rtd not out), who was well supported by all the other batsmen. Cameron Rann (4/14) and Richard Sambrook (3/3) were the pick of the bowlers. St.Georges Ladies played a return fixture at Shifnal on Friday evening recording another win, the highlight of which was an awesome six by Fiona O’Sullivan.

First ever Ladies match at St.Georges

LIL_6410.jpg Last Friday evening was a landmark day for the club, with the first ever ladies match taking place. Chris Sedgley and Steve Wall have done a tremendous job in getting this off the ground. There is now a squad of ca. 16 ladies who have been practicing during the close-season. A series of fixtures have been arranged. Fot the first match we welcomed Shifnal Ladies to Church Street. An enjoyable time was had by all, with St.Georges Ladies (better not call them Dragons) running out winners. See the action pictures here.

New Club Record for 4th XI !

In week 5, there were some low scoring affairs. On a difficult pitch at Albrighton, our 1st XI was bowled out for 149. Jason Summers and former Dragon Ben Miller got 3 wickets apiece. Steve Taylor (21) and then late order batsmen Neil Davies(33) and Scott Peckham managed to make the score half-way respectable. It turned out to be plenty as Steve Taylor (3/19) blew away the top order Albrighton batsmen before captain Ben Byram (5/20) saw off most of the others to give St.Georges maximum points as Albrighton were bowled out for 84. The 2nd XI bowled Wellington IV out for 107, with all the bowlers chipping in with wickets. Alan Denver(35) and David Ross(22) were the backbone of the Wellington innings. The St.Georges reply started steadily enough with opener Sean Parkes making 37. Then wickets began to fall before Liam Forrester and Matt Conniffe took control to guide us to victory by 5 wickets. The 3rd XI conceded 225/4 to Cae Glas with Ruchira Nimanath hitting an aggresive 106 before being brilliantly caught by John Sadler. After a slow start in reply St.Georges eventually got to 193/9 – Alex Dillon (54) , Bobby Gill(51) before having to settle for the losing draw. Club history was once again (see post from last season) rewritten in a 4th XI match – but not in a good way. Having set up  what looked like an easy win by skittling Quatt for 61, 6 (yes, six!) St.Georges batsmen then declined to trouble the scorer. Charlie Dillon then started the fightback, smashing a quickfire 1 , before Haider Raza, Khurram Waris, Steve Pessall and Kevin Myatt raced along to 3,2,2 and 3 respectively. 18 all out, counting the seven extras. Never in the field of human conflict was so few scored by so many … or something like that. The U10s game on Sunday morning was cancelled by Wellington. The U15s finally got their match season off to a start, but were well beaten by Wellington after our batsmen all threw their wickets away after doing well to bowl Wellington out for 202 (six wickets for Richard Sambrook). I won’t mention the score other than to say it was a lot more than the 4th XI!

Umpire Wanted for 2nd XI

Please contact Dave Pope if you can help with this. Travelling is very moderate and the home teas and ale are the best in the county!
