Mike Brennan 1978 – 2011

Mike & Madonna at St.Georges

We received today the sad news that Mike Brennan, who played for St.Georges for three years between 2002 and 2004 has passed away at his home in Australia. As well as being a fine all-round cricketer, Mike was an inspirational character during his time with the club, both for his younger teammates and also for many members of our junior section, where he performed an active role. He was a very popular figure and he and Madonna  made many friends in the local area.  One of his enduring legacies is the six-a-side “fun” competition which he was instrumental in inaugurating. This is now held each year on the Sunday of the August holiday weekend. It will henceforth be known as the “Brennan Six-a-Side”.  Several club members have kept in close touch with him in the years since he left, some even visiting him in Queensland.  Shortly after leaving St.Georges, he was diagnosed with a brain tumour, which, although he fought it bravely for several years, in the end proved fatal. The funeral is on Friday 30th September. Our thoughts and sympathies go to Madonna. The “big man” will always be remembered with affection at St.Georges Cricket Club.

And the Sun did shine upon the righteous

As a roundoff to the junior season we held a parents and kids day on the 4th September. Four teams of 12 were formed and a round robin , fairly light-hearted cricket day, was enjoyed by all who took part. After a miserable start to the day the sun appeared and the whole event was played in blazing sunshine. Special thanks to Chris Cousins for manning the BBQ all day and to all who took part, making a thoroughly enjoyable day for all. Winners were the “All-Stars” team, despite suffering penalties against Bobby Gill for an illegal bowling action and also showing off a bit too much. One or two of the mums looked a bit handy too, and some of their names may be forwarded to the selection committee.
